The Astronomical Society of Maliyadeva College has had many years with crest and troughs. It was established in 1960 by Mr. APK Thilakarathne, yet from year 2000 onwards, it could be named as the Golden Era of Maliyadeva College Astronomical Society. The former office bearers brought the society into a higher level that can compete to the best of the island.
Within these successful years, Maliyadeva College Astronomical Society organized many events including the Astronomical Workshop DISCLOSURE, organized in co-operation with the Astronomical Society of Maliyadeva Balika Vidyalaya. It was continued for several years up to 2014.
Changing this traditional style of Astronomical workshops, this year we have decided to introduce a competition with a new interface, an Astronomical Exploration Night Camp under the title of AUDAX 15. This will be a new , nourishing experience to every student who studies astronomy.
Astronomy can be referred as the origin to Science and Technology. But at present, astronomy has become just a theoretical subject. Through this Astronomical Exploration Camp, we have planned to share the practical Astronomical knowledge, Practical Astro Physics knowledge, surpassing the barriers.
We have planned to hold this event on 5th of June, at Maliyadeva College premises. More than 250 students representing at about 35 schools island wide will be invited for this event and competition. Also about 150 Maliyadeva College Astronomical Society members will be participated on that day.
Together with this event, we have planned to hold the Sri Lanka’s best ever Astronomical Competition, including practical tests of each field related to Astronomy, Observation Astronomy, Theoretical Astronomy, Astro Physics, Rocket Science, Astro Biology, Astro Chemistry & Cosmology. We have planned to award the APK Thilakarathne Challenge Trophy to the winners of this massive competition, together with the honorable title “Best School Astronomical Society – 2015”.
(From each school 10 students will be invited for this event. From them, 5 for the Workshop team and the remain will join with the Astronomical Night Camp.
